ATTENTION HOT RODDERS WORLDWIDE
This is the fifth report regarding the Hot Rod Power Tour coming from Birmingham, AL Courtyard by Marriot.... live and direct at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night, June 8, 2005:
Our driving team began its journey from the Opryland Hotel, after a quick breakfast fuel session, in route to the Birmingham Race Track (Dog racing venue).....John Sonnefeldt (Motorsports Sales manager for Detroit Locker) in the Detroit Truetrac Explorer followed by Mac Bernd (Hot Rod Happenings.com) and Don Johnson in the Detroit Enduro SSR.
Actually we've become obsessed with the speed and handling of the blown SSR and had a few speed runs (130 MPH plus) with a '98 Camaro and a C-4 Corvette (no cats on this Corvette-it was loud with 4 straight thru exhaust pipes!). We did well and the Camaro owner mentioned, at the stop in Birmingham, that he could hear us coming full chat a half mile behind him. We sped by this guy at an honest 135 MPH and almost moved him over a lane!
On arrival in Birmingham, we set our vehicles up and detailed the SSR at the beautiful Dog Racing venue (seriously nice place with huge parking lot) and were almost immediately deluged with heavy rain (We mean heavy!). THE SKIES FELL! Caught me off guard while cruising in the golf cart!
We managed to leave small notes under the windshield of the SSRs in attendance in an effort to do a group photo shot in front of the Detroit Locker at 6:00, but alas...it never really stopped raining (not good for photo work). We're going to try again tomorrow at Tallahassee after a 300 mile plus leg (the longest leg of the event).
Tonight....A Good steak dinner and back to the motel...at which time we managed to nick a curb and dent the right side pipe (sigh). Real bummer.... We must keep the mission as a whole in mind, so we're trying our best not to stress too much....Minor damage considering the pressure this truck has been through and the future it has to endure!
My co-pilot 'Mad Mac' has finally worm himself to a frazzle, so he's is flying home (Texas) in the morning. I'll have to wheel the SSR alone. Less weight more speed & power all the way to Tallahassee then to Orlando for the finish on Saturday!
So we'll be on the road in the morning an hour early (time change issue) in the morning (8:00). Still doing the best I can to get in 6 hours of sleep per night, but it's tough out here!
Until tomorrow......
