This is the fourth edition of the Hot Rod Power Tour Report direct from the run down, ready to crumble Opryland Hotel in the country music capital of the nation (that's Nashville). Live and direct from your faithful reporter, Don 'the beachcomber' Johnson.
11:48 PM June 7. 2004 Attention all Hot Rodders and SSR fanatics:
Let me begin by apologizing for the failed delivery of yesterday's report. We are not computer nurds, we're Hot Rodders and the transmission was not completed. Not our fault. Blame the hotel @ Indy (Courtyard by Marriott-Airport) with their less than adequate web access service!
We arose this morning and plowed down a quick breakfast, filled the tank with 93 (superchargers require good gas), and checked the oil, water, and hoses. We were forced into the DJ&F Explorer for the day's travel to Nashville. The Executive VP of Detroit Locker (who suddenly arrived by air) felt that he needed to drive our Detroit Enduro for the trip to our next leg to Nashville.
Uneventful travel (except for a 45 min delay on the interstate due to a truck mishap). We were relegated to a very boring year old project vehicle designed for comfort without the performance of our Detroit Enduro. We watched the VP (Joe Hige) burn to a crisp with the top down for 225 miles of searing heat!
Quick lunch @ Ruby Tuesdays near the Corvette museum (ugly from the outside as far as we were concerned) and we were off again. After traversing the traffic snarl in Nashville (extensive freeway re-design projects) we were able to enter the Opryland parking lot (huge) where the long haulers and locals congregated for the day.
Due to the crowd to enter we removed a barricade at a back gate and ran into a screaming guard. Just winged him with the side mirror...he'll live! My co-pilot seemed very upset with this activity, but the day’s events sooned simmered him down.
This time we were able to get some very nice photo shots of other SSRs in our 'long hauler' area together with a few other very unique vehicles. We still have plans to gather all Power Tour SSRs in front of the Detroit Locker display area at the next stop in Birmingham, AL. We'll see.
This is a true challenge......especially for official sponsors like Detroit Locker, and we're tired, hot, and truly worn to a frazzle. We will soldier on @ 9:00 in the morning in the SSR again (it's still in one piece!). Today was so hot you could fry eggs on the pavement. Even the dogs were 'tongue dragging'! I mean IT WAS HOT!!
The dinner (such as it was) at the Cascade Seafood cafe (in the relic hotel) was marginal. We would have done a lot better with our server if we had been up on our Egyptian language skills.
We'll report tomorrow night, if we are able to get out of this "hotel" before it falls to the ground from age and neglect.
